During a Santa Ana wind condition in Southern California, the wind comes from the east
from over the desert and goes out to sea.  There are no clouds at all. 
Monday at sunset, looking out at the Pacific. 
Those aren't clouds, but smoke, which is being blown out the sea.

Tuesday, an hour before sunset, the same view.  Fortunately for the firefighters, the winds have subsided considerably, but leaves most of San Diego county in a deep brown smoke
